Car insurance for young drivers - Breakdown cover

Breakdown cover is an important matter to bear in mind when considering car insurance for young drivers - without cover, younger motorists may not realise they could be stranded and helpless in the middle of nowhere.

Perhaps young drivers, more than any other type of motorist, might think about saving a few quid and decide to not tick the box on an insurance quote form that would add breakdown cover to their chosen policy.

But before making a decision they may later come to regret, it is worth them considering the dangers of such a course of action that could turn out to be a serious false economy.

Any driver, not just young ones, can reasonably appreciate how useful the cover can be - whether they opt for such cover or not. If mechanical problems cause a car to go wrong mid-journey, it is reassuring to have breakdown cover as part of an insurance policy.

Being stuck at the side of the road, perhaps in a dangerous place on a motorway, or as a young woman heavily pregnant, can spell real trouble. There may even be a risk of being crashed into by other vehicles.

Motoring organisation, the AA (Automobile Association), has been concerned to point out that drivers are playing roadside roulette by gambling on saving money, risking that their car will not breakdown.

AA Patrol of the Year, Andy Taylor, said, "It will cost you dearly if you break down - in money, time and sheer stress."

AA research has revealed that breaking down and failing to have breakdown insurance has cost about two million drivers a total of £120 million over the last year because they had to arrange costly emergency one-off roadside assistance.

Mr Taylor argued driving without breakdown cover was too risky, pointing out the £120 million cost was enough to buy 12,000 new cars.

Emergency call outs can cost about £90 a time as well as additional costs incurred should mechanical failure mean a car cannot be fixed at the roadside and must be conveyed to a garage.

About a third of all breakdowns are caused by three main problems that can happen any time whatever the type or age of car:

  • Battery failure

  • Tyre problems

  • Mishaps with keys
