Although tempting, wearing flip flops while driving can seriously increase your chances of having an accident and having to make a claim on your car insurance for young drivers. As the weather heats up, nothing is more comfortable underfoot then the flip flop, and in the height of summer, few are seen wearing anything else. According to one survey, one in four drivers admit to driving while wearing flip flops or sandals even though three-quarters of those surveyed admitted they found them tricky to drive in.
The problem with flip flops and other open back sandals is that the sole can easily get stuck under the brake, clutch or accelerator pedals. Without a heel the shoes can also easily come off while changing gear which could lead to an accident.
Stilettos are obviously also not good for driving in and like flip flops; they can seriously impair your driving skills. Heavy work boots with thick soles are also pretty useless as you can't feel how hard you're touching the pedals.
It is possible to buy specially made driving shoes but they're not easy to get hold of and aren't likely to appeal to everyone. The best shoes to wear therefore are shoes that cover the whole of your foot and can securely fasten without the risk of any part of them getting trapped under the pedals. Shoes with thin soles are also the most preferable as you can feel the pedals more easily making braking and acceleration smoother and therefore safer, reducing your chances of having an accident.
