Car insurance rates for the young are set to reflect the level of experience teenage drivers show on the road - where a growing bank of evidence shows them to be more dangerous behind the wheel than other motorists.
A new study has highlighted proof of riskier driving shown by youngsters - and demonstrates why motor insurance quotes for young people can often be much higher than adult quotes.
Hoot Car Insurance Services has decided to publish the risky antics of teenagers in cars to highlight the dangers and help young drivers to learn how to stay safer on UK roads.
Attitudes of 5000 youths were studied in a national young driver survey to examine their perception of about 25 hazardous driving situations.
Teenagers demonstrated three main factors that showed they were more likely to cause accidents or danger on the road:
Fail to see they are inexperienced drivers
Some 85 per cent of teenagers felt their peers (of similar
age) were experienced motorists.
Fail to recognise obvious dangers
While teens were reported to know texting while driving is
dangerous (79 per cent), only 25 per cent said mobile phone
use at the wheel could lead to road accidents.
Insufficient education about risks
Many teenagers in the study had remained unaffected by efforts
to educate them about drink-driving where many saw drinking
alcohol as less risky than the facts.
Study organisers said road safety messages communicated by parents, doctors, teachers and other educators need to resonate better with young people to meet their needs.
