Civics a treat to thieves but a pain to premium-holders
The Insurance Bureau of Canada has announced that the 1999 and 2000 Honda Civic models were the most stolen cars in Canada for a third year in a row. Car theft is a crime that has a direct impact on accessibility to cheap car insurance quotes, bumping up the costs of cheap car insurance premiums to all customers.
Third most popular among thieves, behind the two models of Civic, was the 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX/WRX STi 4-door. The Subaru also has the dubious honour of being the vehicle which incurred the highest average expense for individual motor insurance claims. All of the vehicles most popular with car thieves have one in thing common: no electronic immobiliser switch. Richard Dubau, head of the Canadian Insurance Bureau, commented, "You've got cars like the [Acura] Integra, the [Audi] Quattro, the [Subaru] Impreza and the [Honda] Civic - these are cars that are sporty and desirable, so if they're easy to steal they're going to take them." It has been calculated that car thefts add to the cost of cheap car insurance by as much as $48 per Canadian premium-holder.
