Motor insurance companies categorize cars so that they can provide motorists with a fair level of car insurance for their type of car. Each model is assigned to a group of cars that have similar characteristics.

When determining a car’s group rating a motor insurance company takes the following into consideration:

  • Repair costs: More than 50% of car insurance pay-outs are for car repairs. The likelihood of damage to each model, the estimated cost of parts and labour time involved in its repair will all be taken into account. For example, if the frame of your car is difficult to get hold of then the repair cost and time may be increased. The more that repairs for your car are estimated to cost the higher your group rating and car insurance rate will be.
  • New car value: the cost of your new car is considered as it will indicate how much it will cost to replace that model as new if it is written off in an accident.
  • Performance: if your car has a powerful engine and the ability to travel at excessive speeds your car insurance company may consider you a higher car accident risk, and up your car insurance rate.
  • Car security: if your car has security features such as double lock doors, an immobiliser or car alarm fitted then this may mean you are able to get a cheaper car insurance premium.
  • Car safety: if your car has features such as air bags and side impact beams a car insurance company will take these into account when calculating your car insurance rate.
