What to do if your car breaks down

OK - so you've got yourself a great deal on young driver car insurance, and you're motoring around to your heart's content when, out of the blue, you break down. What do you do?

Be prepared for the unforeseen
There's a fair old chance that this might happen to you and you'll find it a lot easier to cope if you're prepared in advance. So cast your eyes below and absorb the very handy hints we can offer about how to deal with this scenario.

Always check with a professional
Before you do, though, we have to point out for all our sakes that while we're world leading experts in young driver car insurance (or so we like to think) we can never take the place of a qualified car mechanic so always take professional advice about anything worrying.

Follow these rules if you break down
Safety should be your prime concern if you break down - yours, your passengers and other road users. As much as you may love it, your car must take second place to the welfare of people

  • Get your car off the road as soon as possible. If you absolutely can't, then put on your hazard warning lights to warn other drivers and put out a triangle if you can do so safely (and if you have one, obviously)
  • Call the police straightaway if you're causing an obstruction
  • If you've been really sensible and have packed a reflective jacket in your boot, then put it on
  • If it's dark or visibility is poor then leave your sidelights on
  • If your car is in the way of other vehicles, always get everyone out even if you've put out a triangle and are using your hazard warning lights
  • Don't stand between your car and any oncoming traffic for any reason, and don't stand right in front of your lights - this may prevent you from being seen
  • Decide whether you can fix your car yourself or not. If not, then call for assistance as soon as possible
  • Don't leave your car unless you have no other choice, for example finding a phone box when you don't have a mobile

On a motorway
There are other rules to follow if you breakdown on a motorway, so see our guide on what to do if this happens.

Don't get carried away with joy about your young driver car insurance policy
Don't make the mistake of being so delighted with the young driver car insurance deal that we've got you that you forget to prepare yourself properly for other, shall we say, less happy events. You'll love yourself to pieces if you've got all the necessary breakdown kit (warning triangle, reflective coat, torch etc) right there if you ever need it - and you'll be kicking yourself black and blue if you haven't.
