What is an MOT?
Vehicles that have been on the road for over three
years must undergo an MOT test every year. All you have to
do is take your car to a garage where it will be checked for
faults, repairs needed and general roadworthiness.
How much will an MOT cost?
For cars an MOT test will cost you around £45
and for motorcycles an MOT is £20-£30, depending
on whether you have a side car.
What is an MOT certificate?
Once your car passes its MOT you will receive a certificate
confirming that it was up to the minimum acceptable environmental
and road safety standards required by law at the time of your
test. However, this certificate does not mean that your car
will be roadworthy untilthe certificate expires and does not
mean that you should stop maintaining your car in the mean
time.
What is tested during an MOT?
Here are just a few of the many necessary tests
that will be carried out on your car:
The future of MOTs
From 2005 all approved MOT testing stations will
be connected to a central database meaning that some garages
will enter your test records onto a computerised system. You
will then receive an A4 certificate that acts as a receipt
for your MOT. Your proof of MOT will be the computer record
which can be useful if you want to renew your road
tax online.
