ASBO teen with no car insurance jailed after police chase

An ASBO teen who terrorised a town has finally been sent to jail after leading police on a high-speed chase while driving with no car insurance.

Robert White, from Weston-Super-Mare accelerated away from police as they happened to be driving behind him. Although they weren't actually following him before he tried to do a runner, they put on their blue lights and tried to catch up.

White was actually serving the final day of a previous speeding ban in addition to having no motor insurance and so shouldn't have been on the road anyway. Despite this, he tore off through busy streets with the police not far behind.

Driving erratically and sending oncoming cars skidding out of the way, he was finally stopped when several police vehicles managed to surround him and force him to stop. He was found crying in the car and was promptly arrested.

Appearing in Bristol Crown Court on his 19th birthday, White pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, failing to stop for police and also having no car insurance. A judge, who had earlier heard that White had been the youngest ever child in Britain to receive an ASBO when he was 12, sentenced him to 10 months in youth custody.

A spokesman from Hoot Car Insurance Services, experts in providing young driver car insurance at discounted prices, said, "Driving on the last day of a ban seems a bit pointless.

"But 10 months in jail will give this young man plenty of time to think about his actions, not to mention let him realise he's probably forfeited any right to get a cheap car insurance deal."
