Are you covered for flood damage?

Drivers are being warned to check the finer details of their car insurance policies as they may not be covered if they damage their car whilst driving through floods.

Whether you have a cheap online car insurance policy or regular motor insurance from a high street provider, it is likely that your car will only be covered against flood damage when it is parked.

It is unusual for a straightforward premium to cover you for any damage that may be caused to the engine or interior of your motor vehicle if you choose to drive through water.

Although some parts of the South are facing a drought this Summer, other parts such as York are only just recovering from the devastation that the River Ouse caused when it flooded three metres above its normal level.

Certain online car insurance providers have suggested that motorists living in areas that are prone to flooding should take extra care of their vehicles, making sure to park them on higher land.

Hoot Car insurance Services recommends that people should avoid driving on flooded roads and if absolutely necessary alternative routes with minimal flooding should be chosen.

A spokesperson for Hoot commented: 'We are happy to talk our customers through their online car insurance policies to make sure they fully understand what they are covered for. Although we offer the cheapest online car insurance rates around, we don't believe in compromising on quality of service.'
