Are you prepared for a foreign road-trip?

You may have great value online car insurance in the UK but if you're planning to embark on a driving holiday this summer, Hertz, the car rental company, warns that you may not be as prepared for your trip as you first thought.

Although motorists driving in the UK should be well organized before they take to the roads by making sure that they have adequate motor insurance cover and that they do all the various safety checks, driving abroad requires much preparation, especially if you are planning to take your own vehicle.

Hertz have put forward the following tips to help UK drivers before they take their car overseas:

  • Check your oil, water, windscreen wipers and tyres (including your spare tyre).
  • Make sure you display a GB sticker on your car or you could be liable for an on-the-spot fine. If you have a Euro-symbol on your number plate and you are driving in Europe you don't need a GB sticker.
  • Fit headlamp converters to avoid dazzling other drivers. If your vehicle has xenon headlamps, book into your local garage and arrange to have them reset.

This is just a taster of the many things that you should do before taking to the road in foreign climes but it is a good start.

Mike Page, a spokesman for Hoot Car Insurance Services comments: 'This is sound advice indeed. But if you have UK online car insurance before setting out you should also make sure that you will be covered when driving abroad to avoid any nasty surprises or set-backs that could ruin your holiday.'

'There are plenty of cheap online car insurance polices out there so you should have absolutely no trouble getting yourself covered for your trip and still have enough pennies left over to spend on souvenirs from your travels.'
