Forgetfulness; wrinkles; senility; hair loss; incontinence; impotence: few people relish the thought of growing old, but at least we have cheap car insurance premiums to look forward to.
Not so Christian Adam Davies, however. The youth from Mold, Wales, who turned 20 on June 18th, will always remember his birthday as the point at which young driver car insurance suddenly became much more expensive.
After a bizarre series of events, Davies, who one would expect to be blowing out candles, was instead blowing into a police breathalyser - just prior to his arrest. That the breath test proved negative makes the events of the previous night even harder to comprehend.
It began when, after a celebratory night out in Wrexham, Davies and his girlfriend fell to arguing in the taxi home. Davies decided he'd had enough, and elected to walk the rest of the way home - a journey of about ten miles.
Not long into his trek, however, the rows of parked cars in the suburbs of Pontblyddin became too much of a temptation.
Davies, who had previously been disqualified from driving and held no valid motor insurance, broke into one of the houses he was passing, burgled a set of car keys belonging to the Peugeot 302 parked outside, and drove off in the direction of Mold.
All was going well, until he chanced to see a family friend also making her way home. Davies offered her a lift, and it was whilst doing so that he lost control of the Peugeot.
The stolen car came to rest on its roof. Davies fled the scene leaving his unfortunate passenger, who was trapped in the vehicle, to fend for herself. Miraculously, neither she nor Davies were hurt in the accident.
Police followed the trail of carnage and had arrested Davies by 9.30am on the morning of his birthday.
In court, Davies admitted burglary, aggravated vehicle taking, driving while disqualified and driving without valid motor insurance.
Mr Recorder David Aubrey QC, presiding at Mold Crown Court, upbraided Davies for his selfishness. "You ran off leaving that poor woman trapped in the car," he said.
Davies was sentenced to 18 months' youth detention and has been banned from driving for two years.
It'll be a while longer than that before he can expect a cheap car insurance quote, however.
