Car insurance causes young people not to drive

Young drivers are waiting longer than ever before to learn to drive, according to recent research by car insurance company More Than.

The motor insurance firm have revealed that the average age of people passing driving tests is now 21 years of age. In the past, however, it has traditionally been 17, with youngsters desperate to get behind the wheel as soon as legally possible.

One of the main reasons cited for the shift in trends is the increasing knowledge and amount of lessons needed before passing a test is likely. The introduction of theory exams and hazard perception tests make the whole process of learning to drive far more complicated than in previous years.

In addition, the costs of learning to drive have rocketed in the past few years, leaving many young drivers not able to afford to take lessons. A recent increase in university admissions also make more teenagers unable, or unwilling, to fork out for lessons.

The price of young driver car insurance, especially for those in their late teens, can often be so high that it forces youngsters to wait until they're earning decent money before they can afford to splash out.

But Mike Page from Hoot Car Insurance Services explained how that doesn't always have to be the case. He said, "Young driver car insurance can be expensive but there are definitely savings to be made by dealing with a specialist online provider."
