Corvette proves to be a blast from the past

If your car had been stolen in 1969, by now you’d probably have given up hope of ever seeing it again. Not surprising really - it is 37 years ago, long before I, and most of you, were born.

Six years, infact, before David Beckham was born. It was also the year that saw The Beatles’ last number one, the first man on the moon and Concorde’s maiden flight. A long, long time ago.

So your car goes missing in 1969. And your car insurance doesn’t cover for theft so you don’t get any compensation. Bummer. There’s not much more you can do but save up for another one and get on with life.

And that’s what Alan Poster from New York did. He eventually bought himself another vehicle (got proper car insurance this time), got married, had kids, got old and moved to California, eventually forgetting about his beautiful Corvette that got pinched all those years ago.

Then last week, completely out of the blue, Mr Poster got a phone call from the California Highway Patrol. Against allthe odds his car had been found after being intercepted on the way to Sweden . Once bright blue, but now silver and red, it had been sold for $10,000 and was in the process of being loaded onto a container ship bound for distant shores.

How the sports car was recognised remains a mystery, but recognised it was. Detectives in New York then spent a month sifting through 10,000 archived stolen car reports to find the original owner.

US Department of Homeland Security spokesman, Mike Fleming, said, “When the California Highway Patrol contacted him, he said it’s a miracle. He’s very excited about it. He’s flying in tomorrow.”

Alan Poster was said to be delighted when he was finally reunited with his 1960s Corvette, and one thing’s for sure, this time he was straight on the phone to his car insurance company to sort out some proper cover.
