If you're planning on driving abroad this summer, ensure you've got adequate car insurance cover.
That's the warning coming from motor insurance companies, after it was revealed that one in seven British motorists are risking their right to a cheap car insurance deal by driving illegally on the Continent.
According to the latest research by Saga Motor Insurance, just over 14% of UK drivers break the law when abroad by failing to carry compulsory insurance documents and a driving licence with them at all times. In addition, a significant number don't ensure that their policy actually covers them for driving outside the UK, thereby putting themselves at risk of paying massive costs in the event of an accident.
The importance of having proper cover is highlighted by the fact that 15% of drivers surveyed by the car insurance provider revealed they had difficulties using foreign roads. Some found it a problem driving on the 'wrong' side of the road, while a disturbing fifth of all questioned admitted to not knowing how to use foreign roundabouts.
Mike Page from Hoot Car Insurance Services, the young driver car insurance experts, advised, "Many people find driving abroad difficult and an accident could affect your cheap car insurance.
"So make sure you're properly covered and you keep your documents in the car at all times."
