A gang of car insurance fraudsters who deliberately staged more than 60 road accidents have finally been arrested by the police.
The mob of six men and one woman, who operated under false identities, were charged following raids by 80 officers at addresses in Harrow, north London.
The group are alleged to have bought a series of damaged luxury cars at a fraction of their list price, which they then intentionally crashed into other vehicles before claiming the full insurance value. They would also use false witnesses - other members of the gang - to make the innocent victims look like the guilty party.
It is thought that the group made over half a million pounds from their motor insurance scam and had bought a Ferrari and two top-of-the-range BMWs with their profits.
Detective Chief Superintendent Steve Wilmot from the Metropolitan Police said, "We raided a number of addresses and arrested all the people we wanted to. We are pretty pleased with the result which will send a strong message out.
"Where there's money to be made people will try and take it off people. We are determined to try and reverse that."
A spokesman from Hoot Car Insurance Services, the young driver car insurance experts, commented, "People like this cause motor insurance costs to rise, meaning innocent drivers' premiums are being affected.
"The roads should be a much safer place with them behind bars, and insurance costs should fall as a result."
