Honda humanoid robot could lead to car safety improvements

Honda has released its new version of the ASIMO humanoid robot which can carry out key tasks in a real life environment. The ASIMO works in harmony with people, holding hands and receiving objects as a person would. The development of a ‘total control system’ enables the humanoid robot to automatically carry out everyday human tasks. The robot can also run at a top speed of 6km/h and can run round in circles.

The aim of the Honda team which built the robot is to create a useful robot which is intelligent and can carry out advanced tasks. Now that the robot has reached its full physical capacity the research and development team will concentrate on its intelligence, allowing it to make comprehensive judgments based on real life situations.

The R&D team has developed various new technological areas such as posture control technologies, image and voice recognition technologies and technologies to anticipate and avoid collisions. These technologies will be applied to other areas within Honda such as car safety.

With new developments underway we can hopefully look forward to all our cars being fitted with voice recognition ignition systems, a surefire method of bringing down the price of car insurance! The Honda robot may also pave the way for a car which actively avoids collisions, without driver intervention. The safety of our roads may be in the hands of ASIMO and its advanced robot skills.
