It could be said that poetic justice was served last Saturday night as a 24-year-old joyrider crashed head-first into a law firm.
Firefighters were called out to Pallion Road in Sunderland to free the man from wreckage of the Honda Civic he had been driving without permission or young driver car insurance.
He was taken to hospital with leg injuries, and is now understood to be 'helping police with their inquiries' into the smash with the city law firm's office front.
Officers also picked up a woman a few streets from the crash, who is understood to have been a passenger in the car.
Meanwhile, structural engineers are assessing the state of the offices. Geoff Dean, manager of Ben Hoare Bell, the law firm, said "We've evacuated staff from the building, but we can still offer the service to our clients as we've got three other offices in Sunderland."
Regarding the young driver, Mr Dean added "We wouldn't want this to happen to anyone, even if he was being a bit silly."
The implications of "being a bit silly" add up to a bleak future for the driver. You've got to wonder which will be the greater challenge: finding legal representation if he is taken to court or an affordable car insurance quote when he is released.
Mike Page, who sits by the window at Hoot Car Insurance Services, the young driver car insurance experts, said "I'll be careful to be out of the office the day this lad goes looking for a car insurance quote."
