Car insurance news
A twenty-one-year old is unlikely to benefit from the great prices offered on young driver car insurance after being clocked by police doing nearly 150mph.
Nicholas Whittle was driving his Dad’s Porsche - with no motor insurance - when he sped past a patrol car on the Isle of Wight whilst doing more than double the speed limit.
The carpenter was spared jail after a judge refused to accept a charge of dangerous driving, saying, “He went fast for a short time only on a straight road with excellent visibility.
“I have to rule whether speed alone can be the basis of a dangerous driving case. I reach the conclusion that it cannot.”
Whittle will still face charges of speeding and driving without car insurance, and so it is possible that he could lose his licence, but road safety campaigners have blasted the judge, complaining, “If driving at 150mph isn’t dangerous driving we don’t know what is.
“If he’d have had an accident at that sort of speed it would almost certainly have been fatal for him or anyone else involved.”
Speaking outside Winchester Crown Crown, the 21-year-old said, “I was really pleased with the outcome. It’s been very stressful leading up to the case.”
One thing’s for sure, if Whittle does lose his licence as a result of the speeding, he’s also going to find getting a cheap young driver car insurance deal rather stressful when he eventually starts driving again.
