Police in Hull believe that thieves in the city have fallen for the urban myth that Ford CD players can be used within satellite television systems.
Over 70 cars were broken into in December in the city and CD players stolen, many of them from Ford cars.
Detective Inspector Scott Young said: “It would seem that the car criminals in Hull believe that there is some other use for parts of the CD player that is fitted into Ford vehicles. However we have made inquiries and this is not the case. It is a complete urban myth.”
The Police urge drivers to remove CD players from their cars when they are left unattended to reduce the chance that their car will be broken into. Other methods of improving car security include parking in a garage rather than on the street and fitting a car with an immobiliser or alarm.
Victims of theft from vehicles either face higher car insurance premiums if they choose to claim on their policy, or the expense of replacing smashed windows and stolen equipment.
