UK drivers not shopping around for car insurance

A study by Mintel has found that when it is time to renew their car insurance and home and contents insurance, people prefer to stay with their current insurer, even with the wide range of providers to choose from.

The study found that up to 63% of people did not get any quotes from other insurance companies, and of the 30% of people who did shop around, a third only went to a single alternative provider.

Research by Bradford and Bingley has found that UK men are twice as likely to shop around for the cheapest car insurance compared to women, and start comparing quotes further in advance of their premium running out.

The cost of car insurance can differ wildly between providers, often with a difference of several hundred pounds, and some insurers offer quotes at less than half the price of premiums through other providers. Bradford and Bingley research also found that the average amount that could be saved from comparing prices from different insurers is £130.
