No more cheap car insurance for young thief

A crazed driver who sped through red lights and skidded around corners, hitting speeds of more than 100mph on an icy winter night, has been sent to jail for twenty-four months and banned from the road for a whopping ten years.

The sentence means that 23-year-old Darren Hackett will be too old to benefit from the great savings to be made on young driver car insurance policies when he's finally allowed back on the road in 2016.

Warwick Crown Court heard how Hackett, from Acocks Green in Birmingham, broke into a VW Sharan with a group of friends in the early hours of the morning in January 2005. As police arrived to investigate, Hackett and the rest of the gang leapt into the vehicle and sped away from the scene of the crime.

With no lights, and going the wrong way around a traffic island, Hackett roared through quiet villages at terrifying speeds while his passengers threw headrests, screwdrivers and even seats at the pursuing police car.

At one point the VW Sharan reached 105mph and on several occasions nearly lost control on the icy roads. After a pursuit lasting for more than ten miles, police used a stinger device to puncture the stolen car's tyres and Hackett eventually stopped. He attempted to run away but officers gave chase and arrested the youngster.

Appearing in front of a judge, Hackett pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicle taking, driving while disqualified and having no motor insurance.
