Norwich Union is giving another 100,000 motorists the chance to try its innovative pay-as-you-go young driver car insurance scheme.
With a little help from GPS satellite tracking, boffins at the motor insurance provider's offices are able to calculate an up- to-the-minute premium based on mileage. This means that short-distance, infrequent drivers are eligible for cheaper car insurance than other road users.
In the future, the technology could also be used to monitor speeding or erratic driving, and to calculate road tax prices.
Eager motorists swamped Norwich Union with applications for the first 6,500 trial policies when the scheme was launched 18 months ago.
Staff at the car insurance firm are tight-lipped about when pay-as-you-go premiums will be launched onto the mass market, but the fact that trials have entered a second phase with many more subscriptions proves the idea has potential.
