Police crackdown on boy racers could affect
cheap car insurance

Boy racers in a Welsh town are at risk of losing their right to cheap young driver car insurance after a major crackdown by police.

Authorities in Mold have launched Operation Quixotic to put a stop to anti-social drivers after local residents complained and raised concerns at a neighbourhood police forum.

Some vehicles have already been seized by no-nonsense officers and PC Colin Coulborn, Mold's community beat manager, said, "We have had reports of anything from ten vehicles and upwards gathering and racing around the car parks at excessive speeds and performing handbrake turns and other dangerous stunts.

"Not only is this highly dangerous but it is also causing a noise nuisance as many of the cars have loud exhausts and loud stereos. This type of behaviour will not be tolerated."

Under new powers resulting from the Police Reform Act of 2002, officers can seize vehicles that have been used to cause distress, annoyance or alarm after an initial warning has been given. If the owner of a confiscated car does not pay to have it released within seven days, it is then crushed.

Operation Quixotic has already seen three cars seized, five warnings given and one boy racer charged for driving while disqualified, having no motor insurance and obstructing a police officer.

Mike Page from Hoot Car Insurance Services, the online young driver car insurance specialists, commented, "Nowadays the police are really clamping down on people who use their cars to be a pain in the backside to others, and anyone who is charged could find themselves losing their right to cheap car insurance."
