Police launch car insurance crackdown

Young drivers in Cambridgeshire are being warned to ensure they have valid car insurance after police launched a major countywide crackdown.

More than 300 vehicles have so far been seized and police have the right to destroy them after two weeks if their owner's fail to provide documentation to prove that they are covered by motor insurance.

The power to hold and then crush the vehicles of offending individuals was given to the police in February, and officers are ensuring they use the new legislation to set an example to anyone considering driving without motor insurance.

Commenting on the 300 cars that have so far been seized, Sergeant Matt Johnson said, "The fact that this number is so high and continuing demonstrates that there are still some drivers who think it is acceptable to drive without car insurance or licence.

"We will not tolerate people driving on the country's roads without the appropriate documentation and will continue with this robust enforcement.

"These people are a danger to themselves and others."

Mike Page from Hoot Car Insurance Services, the expert young driver car insurance providers, said, "People who drive without motor insurance push up the premiums for all those law-abiding individuals who do pay to be covered, so it can only be a good thing that the police are clamping down."
