Police fear a speeding craze taking hold of young drivers in the US and Japan may soon catch on in Britain.
Speeders use mobile phones to record their reckless driving and then distribute the films on the internet. The need to wow their online audience leads them to take ever greater risks on busier streets, and witnesses agree it's only a matter of time before one of the drivers, passengers or pedestrians involved are killed - leading to a nightmare motor insurance claim.
Young drivers caught speeding like this in UK face a double penalty in the courts, both for failing to obey speed limits and for using a mobile phone whilst at the wheel. British law deems any use of a phone whilst driving - including text messaging, taking photographs and video capture - constitutes a criminal offence, with a price tag anywhere between £30 and £1000 in fines.
On top of this, criminal convictions make it impossible for many young drivers to find a cheap car insurance quote in future.
Perhaps British police could take a hint from their partners in Croatia, who used the video signature of this kind of criminal to catch their man.
The speeder in question, a 28-year-old Croatian biker, chose his home town's website as the best place to post video of himself doing 100 mph on a local backroad. Police tracked him down three days later and issued a hefty speeding ticket.
Taking into account the price of his fine, and the mark-up on his next motorbike insurance premium, we reckon this biker must now be more concerned with fuel economy than speed thrills.
