Bereaved mother says cheap car insurance is not enough to protect new drivers

It might not get you any money off a cheap car insurance deal, but signing a Safe Driver Contract will bring loved ones peace of mind and ought to make you a better driver, according to Leeds mother Christine Sykes.

Mrs Sykes lost her 17-year-old daughter, Lindsay, when a drunk driver collided with the taxi she was riding in. She has been campaigning for safer driving and raising awareness of the risks young drivers face since the Lindsay's death in 2001.

The contract, a written promise consisting of '10 points for staying safe', was conceived by Yorkshire charities SCARD (Support and Care After Road Death and Injury) and CADD (Campaign against Drinking and Driving).

The new driver promises, among other things, to:
". always drive sensibly and not try to impress passengers or other road users . be considerate and respectful towards all other road users [and] do my best to ensure that I and other road users arrive safely at our destination."

Mrs Sykes said "When young drivers pass their test, it's a fantastic achievement that gives them their independence. But they also have to be aware that they are solely in charge of what might be a lethal weapon.

"Anything that could help keep our young drivers safe and raise awareness is well worth considering."

SCARD and CADD aim to have every driver in the UK sign one of these contracts by 2010, potentially leading to fewer accidents and fewer young driver car insurance claims in future.
