A poll conducted by Churchill Car Insurance has named Sir Sean Connery’s 007 character as the coolest screen motorist of all time.
Connery’s James Bond favoured the beautifully sleek Aston Martin DB5, but actually made his motoring debut in a much less glam motor, a rented Sunbeam Alpine as featured in 1962’s Dr No.
The car insurance firm’s survey of 1,800 people revealed Steve McQueen as the runner-up, with his ice-cool portrayal of police officer Frank Bullitt driving a 1968 Ford Mustang in the hit movie Bullitt. Michael Keaton playing Batman came third with audiences hugely impressed by his handling of the Batmobile.
However, it wasn’t only spies, cops and superheroes that made the top ten, with the A-Team’s Mr T and his black GMC van coming fourth, and the Wacky Races’ Penelope Pitstop squeezing into fifth place.
Also in the top ten were the Dukes of Hazzard and their 1969 Dodge Charger, David Hasselhof’s Knight Rider and, somewhat surprisingly, John Thaw’s dour Inspector Morse with his Jaguar Mk II.
Head of Car Insurance at Churchill, Darren McCauley, said, “Everyone has their favourite iconic driver and whilst many of us aspire to be like Sean Connery behind the wheel, most of us aren’t lucky enough to drive the cool cars Bond has driven over the years.”
You may not be able to afford the cars of the screen stars just yet, but you can start saving extra pennies by making sure that you deal with a motor insurance company that specialise in young driver car insurance. Who knows, one day owning that DB5 may not be quite so unrealistic.
