A Swiss driver caught speeding on Canadian roads faces a hefty fine and the prospect of a costly car insurance quote after his excuses failed to satisfy the Mountie who pulled him over.
He blamed it on a lack of goats.
The joy of Canadian driving, the Swiss tourist explained, was "the ability to go faster without risking hitting a goat."
While eastern Ontario policeman Joel Doiron can confirm that goat herds are a rarity on Canadian roads - himself never having seen a goat in 20 years of service - he didn't feel this justified speeding at 100mph in a 60mph zone.
"I've never been to Switzerland," said the cop, "But I guess there must be a lot of goats there."
Mike Page, spokesman for the young driver car insurance champions at Hoot and a long-time fan of Due South, said "I've seen some pretty outrageous motor insurance claims in my time, but trying to talk your way out of a speeding ticket with an excuse as woolly as this beats the lot."
