Teen commits suicide after crash with no car insurance
A teenager has committed suicide after his mum kicked him out for stealing her car and crashing whilst driving with no motor insurance.
18-year-old John Jackson hung himself from the stairs at a friend’s house a week after the run-in with his mum.
John’s mum, Denise, said that her son had previously taken her vehicle on several occasions, despite not having car insurance, but the latest incident had been the last straw.
The distraught 41-year-old said, “He knew how angry I was. I told him that was it, I’d had enough and just go away and leave me alone. It was the last time we spoke.
“I just needed time to calm down. But that was a piece of metal that can be replaced - he can’t.”
After smashing the car into a garden John fled the scene and Denise only knew about the accident when police called to demand a £200 recovery fee. Her son was also charged with theft and driving with no carinsurance or licence.
Denise recalls how one of her son’s friends telephoned her to say that John had tried to kill himself, but as she explains, she didn’t believe him. “I just thought he was doing it to get my attention so I would go over, talk to him and beg him to come back.
"But when I got to the house where he was staying, a policeman outside said John was dead."
It has since emerged that two of John’s friends, including his best mate, also committed suicide in the past three months.
An inquest into the death has been adjourned.
