Teenage girl killed in drink-drive tragedy
An eighteen-year-old who crashed his car after drinking six cans of lager, killing a college student in the process, had only passed his driving test four days before, a court has heard.
Now, in addition to serving a 28-month jail sentence, 18-year-old Peter Hurst will be banned from the road for five years and is sure to miss out on cheap young driver car insurance in the future.
Liverpool Crown Court heard how Hurst had necked the alcohol at a work party before offering two female friends a lift home in the early hours of the morning on July 10th 2005. Less than a mile into the journey he lost control of his vehicle, hit a kerb and one of his passengers, 17-year-old Victoria Gaskell, was thrown out of the car. She wasn't wearing a seatbelt and suffered serious head injuries as a result of the accident.
According to witnesses, Hurst leapt from the wrecked car and cradled Victoria in his arms, sobbing, "Don't die, please don't die."
She was rushed to hospital and passed away several hours later. Hurst was breathalysed at the scene by police officers and subsequently arrested.
Defending, William Swalwell said, "He is not able to give any rational explanation why he got into the car after the party. He did not think he was unfit because of drink and that is a lesson he will have plenty of time to reflect upon."
A spokesman for Hoot Car Insurance Services, the young driver car insurance experts, commented, "This is a perfect example of the damage drink driving can do."
