A teenager from Salford has thrown away his chance of ever getting a cheap car insurance deal after a drug-fuelled day at a bikers' festival ended in tragedy.
Not even a specialist young driver car insurance provider may be enough to save Damien Morrison's pennies after he ran over and killed a friend in August last year.
16-year-old Dominic Hulme died almost instantly from extensive chest injuries, and Morrison was later arrested by police on suspicion of dangerous driving.
Events leading up to the tragic accident began when the group of four friends from the Lancashire city decided to pay a visit to the annual Bulldog Bash bikers' festival in Warwickshire. Despite none of them possessing a driving licence or car insurance, Morrison volunteered to drive and ferried the friends to the event in a Volkswagen Golf.
Dominic Hulme was kicked out of the festival by police on suspicion of theft and was also discovered to be in possession of cannabis. Having being ejected in the early hours of August 12th 2005, he lay down in front of the boys' car to sleep.
The rest of the lads returned several hours later, and unaware that Hulme was asleep under the car, Morrison started up the engine and attempted to drive off. High on a cocktail of drugs and alcohol, with his arm and plaster and suffering from the after-effects of a head injury, he ran over the sleeping teenager as he tried to manoeuvre the car out of the parking space.
The boys, realising what had happened, dragged Dominic into the car and set off for a local hospital, but his injuries were too severe and he died before doctors could do anything.
A spokesman for Hoot Car Insurance Services, the young driver car insurance experts, said, "This is a tragic example of how drink, drugs and a lack of driving experience can result in disaster."
