The cost of driving revealed

A recent survey has found that young motorists are still using their parents’ cars well into their 20s, and some even after they’ve turned 30. And there’s one single reason- cost.

Tax, MOT and fuel are all expensive enough on there own, but when you add the cost of young driver’s car insurance on top, the cost of running a motor can be massive. In fact, the survey revealed that young motorists face, on average, costs of £250 a month to keep their car on the road in their first year of driving.

That’s £3000 a year, and it doesn’t even include the cost of the car itself. In comparison, older drivers can expect to pay just £65 a month, which is less than £800 a year.

So there’s hardly any surprise then that many people still use their mum or dad’s car, but it seems that some rarely contribute to the running of the vehicle. Having not had to fork out for their own young driver car insurance, you’d think that they had some spare cash to fill up the petrol tank every now and then.

But apparently not. 12% never buy petrol, 65% haven’t got a clue how much road tax costs, and 5% even admit they don’t know how to open the bonnet.

What they do know, however, is the high cost of young driver’s car insurance, with nearly all surveyed giving this as the reason for delaying buying their own car.
