Young drivers warned of theft danger

Young drivers across the country are being warned to take extra care following revelations that satellite navigation equipment is being targeted in increasing numbers by thieves.

'Sat-nav' gear is more popular than ever before and police are warning that motorists risk losing their chance for cheap young driver car insurance if they don't ensure the security of their vehicle at all times.

Gary Sibson, a Crime Prevention Officer in Hertfordshire, said, "Although satellite navigation systems are extremely useful they are also extremely tempting to thieves. They will not think twice about smashing a window or care about the level of damage they cause.

"It may seem a chore removing equipment every time you leave the car, but it is far less inconvenient than filling in motor insurance forms, arranging repairs and being without your vehicle.

A spokesman from Hoot Car Insurance Services, specialists in providing young driver car insurance, said, "More and more youngsters are buying sat-nav systems nowadays, and thieves are starting to pick up on this.

"It really isn't worth sacrificing your right to cheap car insurance, so make sure you keep it hidden or, better still, take it with you when you leave your car."
