Three likely lads from Newbury set off last Thursday (21st September) on a 1500 mile rally race to Naples - in a car worth less than £100.
Ex-workmates Alan Russell, 26, Gary Smith, 29, and 25-year-old Tom Ashley-Smith will be fighting off another 120 entries competing in this year's 2006 Staples2Naples Banger Rally.
Alan, who owns the slightly dubious gold VW Golf the trio will be racing in, had the idea of adding stripes of Burberry check to the paintwork and re-naming it the 'chav-mobile'. He and his mates will be wearing baseball caps and white leisure-wear for the duration of the four-day event.
They're hoping to raise £1,000 sponsorship for Cancer Research UK. Their website states: "We are paying for everything out of our own pockets so every penny raised goes to charity."
We know outlay on the car has been kept to a bare minimum - the £100 price tag is an entry requirement for the Staples2Naples race - but car insurance for young drivers like Alan must have cost a pretty penny.
Mike Page, currently Hoot Car Insurance Service's employee of the week and a man who has spent the best years of his life sorting out car insurance for young drivers, said "It's about time chavs were associated with something positive.
"I think the chav is a misunderstood and much-maligned element in today's youth - it maybe has something to do with the reason boy racers pay such extortionate motor insurance premiums.
"It's great that Alan, Gary and Tom are doing something to raise the chav profile a little," he finished.
Asked to comment on the chav-mobile's impeccable styling, driver Andy said: "We thought we would represent our nation in its most popular style. CHAV style!"
"If you've got a gold car, you have to bling it up," he added. And you can't argue with that.
