When a gang of Edinburgh youths chose a vehicle to steal, they looked for something expensive with a big engine - the sort they'd never normally get cover for on a young driver car insurance policy.
Something like a 36-seater First Bus, for example.
On the 18th August, that's exactly what happened. At about 5pm, a group of four or five youngsters snuck onto an empty Number 141 bus parked at Edinburgh's Jewel terminus, while the official driver was taking a rest break.
They drove off along Duddingston Park South and into Niddrie Mills. Police gave chase and, after crashing the bus into a garden on Niddrie Mill Grove, the youths abandoned it and ran off.
The impact had flattened a stretch of chain-link fence and a stone wall.
Ijaz Nazir, speaking on behalf of Craigmillar Community Council, said "It's very scary as there could have been a big loss - they could have hit a car or people walking on the main road."
Police have made no arrests as of yet, and are appealing for witnesses. If they are caught, the youths - believed to be aged between 12 and 13-years-old - will not risk losing drivers licences or young driver car insurance, as they are too young to hold them.
However, the incident is bound to have an impact on motor insurance premiums once they are old enough to drive.
