Whether you have a UK online car insurance policy or have motor insurance from a high street provider, you will no doubt be aware of the jargon used by your car insurance company.
Hoot Car Insurance Services not only specialises in online young driver car insurance, we aim to provide you with easily digestible definitions of insurance jargon so you will be able to understand your car insurance policy with ease.
What is a write-off?
Your car may be labelled a write-off or total loss
if repair costs exceed the value of the car. For example,
if you have a road accident and your car is smashed up, your
car will undergo a visual inspection and an assessment of
the total damage will be calculated. If your car is worth
£6000, and repairs are estimated to cost £6500
your car will be considered a write off by your car
insurance company.
Your car may then be moved into storage, usually with a salvage dealer. This is cheaper than keeping your car on garage premises, which is a great advantage for you since the more money that your car insurance company pay out for your claim the more your future car insurance premiums will cost.
Your car insurance providers will then ask you for the vehicle’s keys and documents such as your registration document, MOT certificate, details of outstanding finance and service records. You will also need to return your original car insurance certificate before the claim can be settled.
Do I need to register a write-off?
If your vehicle is written off, there is no need
to register it as a write-off because most motor insurance
companies will do this for you. Similarly, if you decide to
scrap a motor vehicle then the scrap yard should register
the write-off for you. However, it is always worth checking
with car insurance provider to make sure that everything has
been registered and is up to date.
Will I receive a replacement car?
If your car is completely written off following
an accident then 1 in 4 motor
insurance companies will provide you with a replacement
car.
Hoot Car Insurance Services may be able to arrange for you to use a hire car while yours is off the road. Just provide us with the details of the car accident, including the date and place of the accident as well as the car insurance details of the person who you believe was responsible for the accident, and we will take it from there. See getting a replacement car for more information.
