Slow journey, fast food for young drivers

Hoot Car Insurance Services warns that rising traffic congestion is contributing to problems with health, finance and safety for Britain’s young drivers as they indulge in more food on the move.

As more and more cars pile onto our motorways it is taking longer to commute to and from work. This means having to leave the house earlier, perhaps skipping breakfast or arriving home later and missing dinner. Therefore, buying a quick bite from the road-side greasy spoon is the convenient option that thousands of motorists take.

Hoot know how many young drivers relish a tasty take-away on the way home after a hard day but a moment on the lips could have greater consequences than a lifetime on the hips.

Recent research has revealed that British drivers are spending more money than ever on food on the move. We are spending four times more than our Spanish cousins and double what the Italians spend on fast food.

Fast food is expensive and it could be argued that those drivers giving into a whim for a portion of chips are lining the pockets of fast food chains, perpetuating their growth and world domination.

There is already great concern about the health implications of convenience food which has seen fast food chains such as McDonalds modify their menus to include healthier salad options. However, 70% of Hoot’s policy holders claim that chewing a salad while driving is far more difficult and inconvenient than tucking into a burger.

As well as being less nutritious than a square meal, the very nature of fast food encourages you to bolt your food down which may cause digestion problems. Also, eating on the move may distract drivers from what is going on around then, making them more likely to be involved in a road accident.

Mike Page of Hoot Car Insurance Services comments:
‘There are many young drivers that think grabbing a quick snack on the run is a harmless, quick and easy way of modern life. But, it is important for them to realise that both eating and drinking while driving is illegal and highly dangerous, as they distract the driver.

‘We strongly advise that you avoid eating while in the car as you don’t want to risk causing an accident or having your young driver car insurance rates rocket.’

So just think before taking a bite of a sandwich or a swig from a can as this could cause you to crash your car, cause extensive injuries or worse to yourself and others. You could also potentially receive points on your licence, a monetary fine, a jail sentence and almost definitely a substantial rise in your car insurance rate.
