Levels of car insurance cover The Hoot guide to car insurance cover
Unsure of which level ofcar insurance cover to buy? Well, there are ba sically three options available to you:
- Third party only car insurance cover
- Third party fire and theft car insurance cover
- Fully comprehensive car insurance cover
All car insurance companies differ on what exact level of cover these policies offer, so you should always read your policy document to be sure of your cover. Here is the Hoot guide to car insurance cover to give you an idea of what you can expect from each type of policy.
- Third party only car insurance cover
The most basic level of cover. Ideal for people who own cars which are worth just a few hundred pounds.
Why buy?
The cost of ‘third party fire and theft’ or ‘fully comprehensive’car insurance cover may be more than the value of the car. It’s often cheaper to replace your car if it’s involved in an accident than pay for more expensive policies.
What are you covered for?
Third party only car insurance cover protects other people and their property from damage that you may cause. Policies generally cover you for:
- Liability for injuries to other people (including passengers in your car)
- Liability for damage to other people's property
- Liability for injuries to passengers in other vehicles
- Liability arising from the use of a caravan or trailer, while attached to the car
- Third party fire and theft car insurance cover
Why buy?
If your car is worth over £1000 it’s usually worth having at least this level of car insurance cover. If you’ve got third party only car insurance cover and your car is stolen or burnt out in a fire - you won’t be able to make a claim on your own policy.
What are you covered for?
Third party fire and theft’ offers the same level as ‘third party’ but also covers you if your car is stolen or involved in a fire.
- Fully comprehensive car insurance cover
Why buy?
This is the highest level of car insurance cover available and offers the same cover as third party fire and theft policies, plus cover for damage to your own vehicle regardless of how it was caused and who was to blame.
What are you covered for?
Generally , fully comprehensive car insurance covers you for:
- Any damage to your own car. NB. There is usually an ‘excess’ that you must pay every time you make a claim on your policy
- Personal accident benefit. Certain amounts are paid in the event of the death or specific permanent disablement of the policyholder - and sometimes his or her spouse or family member
- Medical expenses incurred from an accident, up to a stated limit
- Loss of or damage to personal effects in the car, up to a specified limit
