Q. What is a policy excess?

A. Most car insurance policies carry an excess which is the amount you have to pay every time you make a claim on your policy for damage to your vehicle.


Q. Do I have to pay an excess when the accident wasn't my fault?

If you have an accident that is not your fault, Hoot legal expenses insurance can help you claim the excess back from the negligent party or their insurer.


Q. How do I claim back my excess from the negligent party?

A. Hoot legal expenses insurance can help you recover your excess along with any other ‘uninsured losses’ not covered by your insurance policy such as recovery and storage charges or loss of earnings. See Legal expenses insurance for more information


Q. Does my policy include a replacement car in the event of an accident?

A. Non fault accident
If you have an accident that was not your fault, Hoot legal expenses insurance can provide a free replacement car for you to use whilst yours is off the road, as long as you are able to provide details of the person who caused the accident (the third party), their vehicle registration number, their car insurance company, and we are able to get an admission of liability from the third party’s car insurance company.

Fault accident
If you have an accident that was your fault, and have comprehensive insurance, a replacement car may be available under the terms of your car insurance policy or from the body shop that repairs your vehicle. This is subject to their availability and policies.


Q. Am I insured to drive another person’s car?

A. Policy cover does vary so you should check your Certificate of Insurance to make sure you are insured to drive another person’s car. This cover is generally limited to third party cover only. So you would be liable for any damage to the car in the event of an accident which was your fault.


Q. I've been a named driver on someone else's policy so do I get a no claims discount if I get my own insurance?

A. It is only possible for the actual policyholder to benefit from a no claims discount but we can usually arrange an introductory discount for you if you are claim free for a number of years before taking out a policy of your own. Please call us on freephone 0800 954 97 55 to discuss this.


Q. I'm getting a second car, so can I use my no claims discount twice?

A. Your no claims discount can be applied to one vehicle only. But if you are claim free we can usually offer an introductory discount. Please call us on freephone 0800 954 97 55.

*A replacement car can usually be arranged under any of the following conditions:

1.Non fault accident – where we have the name, car registration number and insurance details of the person who caused the accident, we will supply a replacement car on a credit hire basis. This means the charges for this service will be passed onto the insurance company of the person who was responsible for the accident. This service may not be available where we are unable to get an admission of liability from their insurance company, or wherethe driver is unknown or uninsured.

2.If you have comprehensive insurance, a replacement car may be available under the terms of your insurance policy. Please check your policy details for more information.

3.The repairing garage may be able to provide a replacement car. This is subject to availability.
