Young motorists - Buy a helicopter, learn to drive or take public transportLearning to drive in modern times is costing an arm and a leg – looking around the Internet and a couple of websites http://go-red.co.uk, http://www.theaa.com, young and learner drivers can say goodbye to well over £1000.
With car running costs for 2008 said to average more than £2200 in a year for insurance, petrol, servicing et al – and that's not counting thousands of pounds lost in vehicle depreciation – drivers must be wondering about giving up their Ford, Vauxhall, BMW, VW, Peugeot, Renault, Toyota and Audi – ha, no more car insurance! Maybe worth investing in a helicopter then – how about an Agusta, Bell, Brantly, Boeing, Enstrom, Eurocopter, Kaman, Lancair, MD, Robinson, Rotorway, Schwiezer, Sikorsky or Westland? Maybe one day, young drivers will be learning in some kind of Apache chopper – getting to be the ‘Air Wolf' pilot they dreamt about. Wonder if comprehensive insurance then will still cover social, commuting, business and pleasure – makes you chuckle to think about it. Your obvious thought now is you'll probably take public transport because a helicopter is way too expensive to buy, run and maintain. And yes, that is surely the case - at today's rates in London, New York, Milan and Paris, they're too expensive. One of the little two-seater ones can cost £140,000. Very pricey. But think again - imagine all these costs coming down making such useful flying toys affordable. Just imagine. Already you can buy those gyro-copters for much less than a BMW or Merc. Remember those? James Bond had one – Little Nelly it was called in You Only Live Twice. It was Einstein who said: "Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life's coming attractions." And there must be many people at least sometimes imagining flying helicopters to work instead of the nine-to-five (9-to-5) gridlock grind on UK roads today. It doesn't bear thinking about at times - stuck on those highways and byways – no quality of life there. Even worse if you have a bad crash or three. Then there's the hulking road rage drivers cutting you up, the one-fingered salutes. Life on today's roads are not such a joy, it has to be admitted. Lots of us little rats, in our mechanical rat covers, racing to get to our rat ‘work caves' to do more ratty inventions so we can carry on rat racing. Makes you think. No wonder human beings across the ages have sought refuge sailing the seven seas or trying to explore the heavens. "Get me out of this place," they said, heading for the next port… More than ever now, many a 21st century Man (or Woman) must be wanting to flee upwards. No wonder we yearn to explore space – imagine, a nice cosy planet with pretty people, nice views, quiet, plenty of food, no hassle, no bills. Nirvana perhaps. Money seems to be the issue perhaps. Money may not be everything, but it's right up there with oxygen, it seems, at least at times… a lot of times in western society! Perhaps people's ingenuity will know no bounds. People will work out how to fly for free, eat for free, drive for free, live for free – while not consuming the world's finite amount of resources. Else, we won't work it out. It'll be a mess – and many of us will die, living unhappy, maybe short, lives. Ghettos will form, the rich will get richer, the poor poorer. Rubbish will lay uncollected, our seas will be polluted, the greenhouse effect will devastate the globe, England will be flooded by rising waters. Maybe we'll kill hundreds of thousands in the deserts left by global warming. Cars and helicopters could become a distant memory, with no resources left on planet earth to develop the power needed to get vehicles moving. We'll only be able to walk and run everywhere - unless we run out of food or we suffer from some kind of mobility disability. Hmm - time to wake up. Where was I? Oh yes, talking about car insurance for young and learner drivers, learning to drive – that kind of thing. There was a neat idea on an Internet forum. Learner and young drivers should maybe try this, especially bearing in mind the cost of car insurance for young drivers and everything: First, learn to drive in a car with a friend, colleague or parent, learn the basics. Then go to an instructor to learn how to pass your test. The person who wrote this is called ‘broadz' s/he was told that s/he could drive and needed to refine techniques to pass the test. After four lessons, s/he passed the driving test. Total cost of learning to drive, including buying a car, was £130. Admittedly it was 22 years ago – but still, learning to drive on an affordable budget is not pie in the sky. Good luck learning to drive… a whole new life awaits you. Me? I'm looking to buy a cheap helicopter – God knows how I'll afford it!
