It was alarming to discover that the astrological star sign motorists are born under could explain why some groups of drivers are involved in more crashes than others.
Latest research examining 700,000 motor vehicle accidents over five years shows that Aries folk - the poor old rams in the UK population - are most likely to be in a smash.
Carrying out a straw poll in the office, it was remarkable to get immediate confirmation that the top and bottom of the just-issued 'league table' of astrologically-linked car crashes contained at least several grains of truth.
Our Sagittarian brother-in-arms just across the desk from me at Hoot's UK offices - remember, we're the experts finding some of the best motor insurance for young drivers - proudly revealed he's not had even as much as a scratch during his driving career.
Then, at the same time, the young Aries woman - who deals with the claims side of the business - just hung her head in shame as soon as the story was read out.
Being a company always focused on cheap car insurance for young drivers, we wondered how we should view these findings.
The fun-loving side of us couldn't wait to take the mickey out of the poor old rams of the zodiac - well-designed for crashing aren't they with those battering horns on the top of their head :-) ... always headstrong, head-down, banging into things. All us Hootsters were having a right laugh at our 'bull bar' colleague.
But that said, and chuckling out of the way, overall, we were plain amazed to see anecdotal evidence backing up the research findings. Here's the zodiac car crash table of results:
Acting very sceptical about this 'written in the heavens' stuff, Hoot researchers then went looking for evidence to disprove such astrological twaddle, only to find more trends' research backing up starry connections shown in this most recent study carried out by Co-operative Insurance.
Gemini is second bottom of the crash league table published here. So, lo and behold, what do we find... another piece of research, dating back to 2002, that demonstrated they were the worst of drivers.
Easily bored, restless and frustrated by things moving slowly, Geminis had more motor accidents than any other sign.
Now, that's not a bad confirmation of the 2008 table from the Co-op car insurance company, is it? And Taurus is mentioned as next worst in that older research as well, then Pisces. All these star signs are showing up in similar placings this year as well.
It is quite uncanny. The second study of 160,000 car accidents in Australia by a financial service company called Suncorp Metway also finds Scorpios to be safe drivers, alongside Sagittarius.
Scorpios are said to be sensitive to energy - whether it is a foot pedal control or thousands of miles away. They can feel someone "coming up from behind" at many different levels - a handy skill when you're driving!
So - what are the young dudes running Hoot (that's Sagittarian boy, Aries girl and me, the well-balanced Libran driver) going to do about this evidence corollary?
Well, to date car cover premiums aren't worked out by star sign but if the evidence keeps mounting, you don't need to be a rocket scientist to work out what's going to happen, do you, all you cheap car insurance young searchers? Watch out, Aries and Gemini drivers!
