I am a safe young driver, give me cheap car insurance - please!

Cheap car insurance - it's everywhere isn't it - on the telly, in the newspapers, the motoring mags, the internet, you just can't get away from those naff adverts with a second rate actor telling you "we can give you the best deal". But when you say to them, on their friendly helpline, I'm 17, I've just passed my driving test, and I want your best deal on young driver car insurance, you can almost hear the operator gasp, can't you?

I write about young driver issues for a living. I write about the cars we drive, the cars we aspire to drive, the cars we wouldn't drive in a million years and the way we want to be treated as young motorists. And I think we get a raw deal.

My mum always said to me, "Never tar people with the same brush."

My nan used to say, "You should never judge a book by its cover."

And my dad says, "Where's the remote?" when actually he's sitting on it.

So, why are all young drivers made out to be the reckless, feckless, aggressive, danger monkeys that cause all the accidents on the roads? Some of us took pass-plus, some of us did a motorway driving course, and some of us have a desire to live a long and healthy life, so we don't drive like lunatics.

I recently read some interesting statistics - interesting cos most of the statistics just point out how dangerous we are - from the Department for Transport (DfT). The data is from the 2007 driving year and a lot of the accident statistics are down - which is great news all round, but most encouraging are the young driver stats.

Apparently, 72 fewer motorbike riders and car drivers, aged 16-29 years-old died on UK roads in 2007 than in 2006. In total there were 2,946 people killed on UK roads in 2007, that's 7% down on 2006; a total 124 fewer deaths.

Sheila Rainger, deputy director of the RAC Foundation, said: "It is a pleasure to be able to commend young drivers for making such a huge improvement in road safety. However, the road safety community must continue working to ensure this is a sustained improvement and not a flash in the pan.

"Continuing to develop positive driver attitudes, particularly among young and novice drivers; encouraging better communication between road users; supporting high-profile enforcement by traffic police, and implementing engineering improvements at known accident hotspots will help to sustain this improvement."

Positive driver attitudes - now there's a thought. How about being positive about me as a young driver? I pay my tax, I buy my car insurance, I get my car MOTd and serviced regularly, I don't drink and drive, and I think I am a safe driver. So, when is someone going to say - there are good young drivers out there?

What the heck - I'll say it.

THERE ARE GOOD YOUNG DRIVERS OUT THERE - And I can't wait until the man with the fake parrot (or is it a cockatoo?) on his shoulder says I can get cheap car insurance too.

Digg!
