Did the Peugeot sponsored Rugby World Cup bring shame or envy?

There was a huge build up to the penultimate game where England played France in the Rugby World Cup on Saturday 13th October and it was wondered whether this make or break game would invoke a state of utter shame on one team and sheer envy on the another, as the winners went through to the 2007 Rugby World Cup final.

As Hoot Car Insurance Services are the young driver car insurance experts based in the UK, we were of course rooting for last time's champions, the England boys. For this all important game everyone in the office was praying that Wilkinson was on form with his fantastic drop goals and the likes of Robinson and Sackey would manage to weave their way past the French defenders to mount up those tries.

As official sponsors of this year's games, we are sure that Peugeot were also hanging in the balance to see if their native France would get the chance to compete for the cup. We're sure after their close defeat they were able to relate to one of the aforementioned emotions, just like the drivers portrayed in two of their recent ad campaigns.

For the Peugeot 307, a duo of ads was released entitled ‘Shame' and ‘Envy'. In the first ad the viewer gets to see numerous drivers hiding their cars in shame as they see the new Peugeot 307 approaching.

Cars are hidden on driveways under covers, in garages, behind an articulated lorry, under the hanging braches of a tree and in the dark of a multi-storey car park. Next, a man is seen weeping with shame in his car, at which point the tagline: "Terrible thing, shame" comes up on screen. Finally, a car drives through a corn field in order to avoid the shame of passing the supreme 307 on the road.

On the flip side, the second ad shows various attempts by members of the public to destroy a man's Peugeot 307 because they are green with jealousy. The car survives many attacks including: having bread placed on the roof so that swarms of pigeons swoop down and mess on it, someone launching a shopping trolley at the car in order to dent it and a car park attendant letting down a barrier on the car. One car is even covered with sand, another has a skip placed right behind it so that its owner can't back it out of a garage and a meat bone is placed on the car so that it is chased down the road by ravenous dogs.

The most drastic scene reveals the car being crushed by a grand piano from height. At this point, the owner puts his head in his hands with total despair. A billboard showing a billboard poster of the 307, which has been ripped to shreds brings the ad to a finale with the tagline: "Terrible thing, envy".

Both of these ads from Peugeot made the Hoot Car Insurance Services team chuckle and made us wonder whether any members of the French rugby team would be hiding with shame after being kicked out at the final stage of the contest.

However, as it happened, neither team went down the route of the Peugeot ads and both walked away from that pitch at the Stade de France, Saint Denis with their heads held high, after all, rugby players are gents.

Digg!
