VW Touareg helps find king of CowesThe people at VW are well and truly into sponsoring high-brow events which reflect on the status of Volkswagen's much-loved luxury car models. From Touareg equestrian events such as the European Championships at Blenheim to the Volkswagen Masters Golf Tournament that was held throughout May and July 2007, VW has really jumped on the sporting sponsorship band wagon. But the most recent sporting event to don the VW logo on their equipment is Skandia Cowes Week. We are certain that sailing enthusiasts throughout the land can't wait to jump into their Jettas and get down to the jetty for a bit of yachting action this summer. Between 4th and 11th August there's nowhere else that those who love all things nautical would rather be and they will be flocking in droves to the Isle of Wight to share in this acclaimed annual sailing event. The world's oldest, largest and most revered sailing regatta has been running for more than 180 years and, as well as attracting 8,500 competitors from around the globe, around 10,000 visitors will be cruising along to Cowes for each of the eight days that it is running. This alone is a great reason for a prestigious car manufacturer such as VW to form an association with the popular event. However, the main reason why Volkswagen Touareg is such an appropriate sponsor of this monumental sailing regatta is that, with a combination of exceptional on and off-road capabilities as well as fantastic control and power, this 4x4 is the ideal choice for towing a yacht. VW tell us that the Touareg has the edge on other 4x4s. Without compromising an ounce of comfort it has enough torque to pull a load, water-bound or otherwise, of as much as 3,500 kilograms. In addition to this, Touareg drivers will be able to carry out the process of getting their vessel water bound from towing to launching. This wondrous beast of land and water has the amphibious ability to wade through water up to half a meter in depth (rising to 580mm with optical air suspension). It even features a Hill Hold Assist function which makes launching from slopes a breeze. Those boffins at VW have thought of everything! Event organisers will be putting these bold claims of innovative design to the test this year as the successful German car manufacturer will be supplying Touareg models for use throughout the week. One helm will even have a chance to become a proud owner of his or her very own Touareg as the 25 winners of each of the most competitive classes from last year's event have been invited to compete for the title Volkswagen Touareg King of Cowes on Friday 3rd August in a one-day three-race regatta. Across 34 classes, yachts measuring 19ft right up to the ICAP Leopard and Alfa Romeo both measuring in at 100ft, an array of races will take place to measure skill on the water. However, the largest class of 98 is the Laser SB3 Class, also sponsored by the Touareg for the fourth consecutive year. This fleet has seen enormous growth and has not only become the largest fleet racing at Cowes but is also the most active one-design fleet in the UK. Well, Hoot Car Insurance Services is loving the link between land and water that VW has formed but we are not thinking that launching either a precious Polo or babe-magnet Beetle into the big blue would be the best idea as far as our beloved cars and our cheap car insurance premiums are concerned!
