"Future proofing" is my favourite zeitgeist phrase of the moment. It seems to me to grasp a two-fold concept inherent in all of us; a willingness to grasp what is coming and run with it, juxtaposed with a petrifying fear of the new. And it was with this in mind that I set about finding out how to future proof my young driver car insurance along with my shiny happy automobile.
Sadly, short of never crashing, buying a decrepit car with a teeny tiny engine, and taking my mother's advice about never driving with more than one of my mates in the car, the only way to future proof cheap car insurance is to grow older and become a more experienced driver. Boring!
So, what is "future proofing"? Well, it's really just a flashy way of saying you're trying to predict the future. No, it's nothing to do with raven haired women wearing massive gold earrings, staring into teacups and saying, "I see a tall dark stranger." It's primarily to do with tekky-speccy people scratching their heads in the deep dark recesses of research labs, who then take wild stabs at guessing what kinds of technology are going to stand the test of time.
It appears that the first usage of the term "future proofing" was to do with the storage of digital data; making sure the means with which you have chosen to digitally store your statistics, records pictures, etc., remains viable, intact and gives access in years to come.
However, the term has now passed in to mass media usage; particularly into the terminology of those vocab conscious marketing bods out there. And to prove it, I found some quite ludicrous uses of it when I Googled the term "future proof car".
First up, the future proof car park! What the blurb about this technologically advanced master stroke of architectural prowess rather boringly meant was that if they needed to, they could build an extra floor, in the future, to create more parking spaces. Ughhh! I exclaimed. There is never enough parking anywhere, ever, so why don't you just build your car park as big as you can the first time round and don't faff around selling it as future proof when clearly you know it won't be big enough and your telling people you've already realised this.
Next up, future proof homes. Back in the days of the Second World War a future proof home was called a bomb shelter and the most technological data storage worry they had was whether or not there was time to dig out the precious baby photo album before the next doodle-bug bomb dropped on their heads.
Nowadays, a future proof home is all to do with sustainable fuels and holistic neighbourhood design; preservation of permaculture/native species landscapes, green building projects and the optimisation of building performance.
Round my way, all we need is burglar proof homes; the permaculture seems fine, it's the pondlife we need to worry about.
So, back to future proofing your car insurance; well, I'm sorry, but I didn't get much joy. I know how to future proof my buy-to-let property, and how to future proof my career. I also know all about future proofing my digital assets and my URLs, but as far as my car or my car insurance is concerned, no-one seemed to want to tell me how to do it. Back to just getting older and wiser then!
I'm guessing, if I could offer some FP advice for your car (see, I've coined a zeitgeist phrase just there - "yeah, I can't do the washing up right now, I'm FPing my digital assets!") I would say; keep it serviced, get all the in-car digital music gadgets you can, and try to convert to some sort of bio-fuel.
Personally, aside from keeping my young driver car insurance as low as possible by not crashing, I'm trying to get my car to run on a fuel made out of the fumes that emanate from my boyfriend's football socks. If I could do that I'd be a future proofed billionaire.
