After the Mondeo was voted as car of the year by Auto Express, the highest selling motoring weekly in the UK, Hoot Car Insurance Services is going to look at what's so hot about this particular model from Ford.
The Ford Mondeo has shot to the top in the respected opinion of the magazine's road testers despite its 'desire' advert, which received some damming reviews. The advert features other makes of cars attached to balloons so that they float away leaving just the Ford Mondeo, which suavely pulls up and is presented to us as everything that we want out of car. Well, a first-class rating by Auto Express suggests that people do desire the Mondeo.
As well as claiming the title of Car of the Year, the Mondeo was also deemed best family car and best estate car by the bestseller which provides news and reviews on the latest models.
David Johns, editor in chief of Auto Express, said the following on why the car is regarded so highly, "The Mondeo delivers effortlessly, performing with aplomb everywhere. It steers beautifully, rides with a composure and smoothness that's absent from even the best German executive cars, handles tautly and has a great range of engines. It's also vast inside, beats its rivals for quality, is clearly laid out with great refinement and comfort levels to take the sting out of everyday driving."
According to the best selling motoring weekly, this particular Ford model is also better than all the rest when it comes to family cars, as it is roomier inside and offers a drive that's smoother than smooth. What's more, it looks fantastic so the kids won't cower in disgrace when mum or dad comes to collect them from school. Auto Express describes the Mondeo as "striking without being controversial".
The magazine's editor in chief went on to say, "Combining the sheer amount of room on board with its trademark hatchback, the Mondeo is more flexible than booted rivals. Every passenger gets increased space and greater seat comfort and no rival cruises as comfortable at high speed or deals with coarser surfaces so well.
"It even delivers a cosseting ride around town and, thanks to its stiffer body, handles beautifully too. The incredible 75-car range completed the credentials that made Mondeo a worthy winner of the family car crown."
Not only was Ford's hatchback Mondeo rated highly but the estate was also recognised as a supreme model, showing that although the designers had desire very much in mind they did not compromise on the car's functionality. David Johns especially favours the car's spaciousness, "Quite simply, the new Mondeo estate is what all good load-luggers should be - big, practical and superb at carrying stuff. From its hanger-like luggage bay to clever options such as the sliding floor, the Ford feels like a car which is designed to work for a living."
Perhaps the profile of this car was aided by its starring role in the latest Bond movie. While James Bond's car of choice did not depart from the classic Aston Martin, which has been linked with the character since Sean Connery drove an Aston Martin DB5 in Goldfinger (1964), the Mondeo made a cameo appearance in Casino Royale.
The Ford Mondeo was in fact the first car to appear in the film, which took a box office total of around £55.3 million, as Bond (Daniel Craig) used it to drive to a hotel after arriving in the Bahamas on the trail of a terrorist group. The model used in the blockbuster was a specially-built 5-door example of the new Mondeo and was not only fitted with a sports bodykit but was also finished in a striking tonic blue. Presumably, this sporty model provided Bond with a stylish yet smooth drive early on in the film, making sure he was more stirred than shaken (sorry!)
Whatever the reason that the Ford Mondeo has shot to fame in the eyes of the industry's specialists there are a few people in the Hoot Car Insurance Services who can't wait to take the Ford Mondeo for a test drive.
