Drunk drivers blame "beer pressure"

A study commissioned by a UK motor insurance company has found that a staggering 22% of drivers are prepared to risk road safety and their chances of receiving cheap car insurance by succumbing to "beer pressure" and drink driving on a night out.

The 2,000 drivers who participated in the survey also showed that there are strong levels of support for a complete ban on any kind of alcohol-related driving. 40% of those who took part said that they would like to see such a zero-tolerance approach.

It seems that the drink drivers are not prepared to take responsibility for their flagrant flouting of the law or their lack of practical concern for receiving cheap car insurance. Instead, they blamed peer pressure, cheap drink promotions and happy hours for their willingness to take to the road while drunk.

Among the 2,000 respondents, 45% said that they regularly drive after drinking the legally allowable amount of alcohol, while 4% confessed to often to doing so.

A spokesperson for the UK motor insurance company commented, "Drinks promotions add to the 'beer pressure' experienced by seeing your friends and colleagues having a great time.

"So it is no surprise that people succumb and end up having a drink when they weren't going to."
