A Spanish man who ruined his chances of a cheap car insurance quote won't be too disappointed at the news: firstly, because he'll hang onto a £360,000 motor insurance payout; and secondly, because he's blind.
Cheap car insurance firm Mapfre tried to reclaim Domingo Merino's compensation money - awarded for the car accident that blinded him in 1996 - when they heard he had been caught by Spanish traffic police doing 98mph on a Barcelona highway.
Staff at the motor insurance company said the speeding conviction proved Merino could see. However, a Barcelona court dismissed the case when it heard he had driven only in a straight line, and with his wife beside him to warn of approaching obstacles.
A repentant but relieved Merino explained he had just wanted to "drive one more time".
