Bromley road safety group tells young drivers to drink

A Bromley road safety think-tank is campaigning for a radical new approach to drink-driving, which they claim could bring an end to the high crash rates and costly car insurance for young drivers that have plagued the UK for decades.

In an about-face that has left many policy-makers scratching their heads, the Bromley Borough Roads Action Group is actually encouraging learners to drive while under the influence.

"Offer them some experience of drinking and driving," said the group's chairman, Roger Lawson. "Not enough to put them over the limit but enough so they might at least recognise that any amount of alcohol affects their performance."

"'Only the foolish learn from experience - the wise learn from the experience of others,'" said Mike Page, spokesman for Hoot Car Insurance Services and an authority on car insurance for young drivers.

"There's no way giving learners an early taste for drink-driving will reduce death rates or the cost of motor insurance quotes - it's more likely the opposite will happen," he added.
