Most British motorists make finding a cheap car insurance policy top priority when it comes to renewal time - but it seems few of us actually check to see what we are buying.
New research from motor insurance provider M&S Money shows a worrying disparity between peoples' expectations of their cheap car insurance and the level of cover that the policies actually provide.
The mistake most commonly made by policyholders is to assume they'll be given a replacement car if their own is written off or stolen. 62 percent of those in the M&S study thought so - but in fact, only 1 in 5 car insurance policies offer the service.
Multiplied up, it means that about eight million UK drivers could be left waiting for a courtesy car that never comes. What's more, the research revealed that 72 percent of us have no second car to use in just such an emergency - and just 1 in 4 know of one they could borrow or could afford to hire as a replacement.
"It's alarming that so many motorists believe that they will get a courtesy car whatever happens to theirs," said an M&S spokesman. "Those unfortunate enough to have their car written off or stolen are left high and dry by most insurers."
